Teachers, staff, and students are encouraged to come in their traditional clothes from either of their parents' cultures. Students who are not planning to wear a traditional dress should come in their school uniform.

Students can bring in a traditional dish to share with their class.  If you would like your child to bring in a special traditional food to share with their class, please make sure it is NUT FREE and SESAME FREE. Please make sure you label your plates and utensils so that they may be returned to you.

December's Du`aa'

Prophet Ibrahim alayhi as-salam brilliantly asked Allah to help him and his offspring become establishers of Salah (in the form of an actual prayer or the establishment of continuous connection with Allah).  The answer to his du`aa resulted in the coming of great prophets and messengers such as Ismael, Is-haq, Daoud, Ya`qoub, Yusuf, Musa, Issa, and prophet Mohammed peace be upon him.

Rabbi ij`alnee muqeema assalati wamin dhurriyyatee rabbana wa taqabbal du`aa

"My Lord, make me an establisher of prayer, and [many] from my descendants. Our Lord, and accept my supplication."

December's Trait- Patience

We have been talking about 'Respect' during the month of November, and now are starting to talk about December's trait- Patience.

Students will be reminded of the following verse:

"Allah surely loves those who are the Sabireen (patient)" (Al-Imran: 146)

Islamic Studies:
To integrate Islamic studies with the month's theme (patience), SK1 students learned about the story of Yunus (as) and the whale.

The students learned the following lessons from this story:
  • the need for patience in all our affairs
  • the reward for acknowledging our mistakes / weakness
  • repenting for the wrong done
  • constantly praising Allah and seeking Allah’s forgiveness (that can then help later in challenging situations.)

Art:

Since we always like to integrate what we learn in one subject to another. SK1 students made a nice craft about the story of prophet Yunus and the whale. Please check out our bulletin board! MashaAllah, way to go SK1!

Pajama Day!!

SK1 and SK2 had so much fun watching a movie together and eating popcorn. Thanks to teacher Nura for buying the popcorn for both classes. The students had a wonderful time hiding under the class tent and playing with their flash lights and stuffed toys!

Jazakumullahu-khaira for your co-operation and support!

Assalam Alikum Dear Parents,

 Language Arts:

I   In phonics, alhamdullelah we finished the second jolly phonic book. This book covered the following letters: c- k -e- h- r -m and d. Last week we finished the last two letters( m and d). We learned how to write both the upper and lower case of these letters and we learned the sounds and actions.

Please check the YouTube below for further practice at home:

The progress of this book can be assessed on the skills checklist below:

Reading:

Recognize the second group of sounds: c, k, e, h, r, m, d.

Can blend simple words made up from the sounds learned so far.

Saying the sounds, and making the word is the next stage after recognizing the sounds.

The child should sound it out as d-u-ck (not d-u-c-k). This is also applies to other doubled consonants in words such as bell, rabbit, carrot, and dress.

Writing:

Holds pencil correctly.
Ensure the pencil is held between the thumb and first two fingers.

Can write the second group of sounds: c k, e, h, r, m, d.

Can hear the ending sound of a word.
For example, that red ends with a /d/ sound.

Reading in our classroom:

We will start our next book of shared/guided reading next week inshaAllah.
The book title is: What can I see?

Sunday 2 November 2014

SK1 Weekly updates: (Oct. 27- Oct. 31)!

Language Art/phonics:
Al hamdullelh, we finished our first phonic book and we had lots of fun learning the sounds of the following letters S, A, T, I, P and N. Please ask your children about them and watch as they make the sounds and the actions. We will continue working in the first book next week to do more phonic related activities ,review and to assess all the children inshaAllah.

The progress in this book can be assessed on the skills checklist below

Reading:
Recognize the first six sounds: s, a, t, i, p and n.
These six letters have been introduced first as they can form more simple three-letter words than any other six letters. For example: sat, pin, tip, tap, ant, pat, tin.
Can blend simple words
The ability to blend sounds (running the sounds together to make words) is basic to reading.

Writing:
Hold pencil correctly.
Correct pencil hold is important. The pencil should be held in the tripod grip between the thumb and first two fingers. If the hold starts incorrectly, it is very difficult to get right later on. You will need to show the correct hold on many occasions, and keep on giving reminders.

Can write the first six sounds: s, a, t, i, p, n

Can hear the beginning sound of a word.
For example, Snake begins with a /s/ sound.i

Reading in our classroom which deals with social skills/manners:

We read the following stories:

I Am Positive!
Manners on the Telephon

e

Guided/shared reading:

I am working on teaching the SK1 students how  to read and write simple sentences by sounding out the letters and then blend them together.  We will allow the students to model the teacher by reading simple sentences to the class every day. In addition, new sight words will be introduced each week inshaAllah.
Last week the students have been excited to read for their classmates during circle time.

The title of our book is: I Can!
These are the sentences your child is learning to read:
I can skip.

I can slide.

I can run.

I can ride.

I can skate.

I can swing.

I can do anything.
