Weekly Updates!

kindergarten

Assalam alikum,

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Accomplishments

In Phonics:
We started our first phonic book. This book will cover the following letters: s, a, t, i, p and n. The sounds are taught in a specific order (not alphabetically). This enables children to begin building words as early as possible. We had lots of fun learning the sounds of two letters last week, the letters S and A. Please ask your child about it and watch as they do the actions that go along with the sounds. This year we are putting a lot of emphasis on the proper writing method of the letters in lower-case and capital form. We are also discovering the sounds that these letters make as they appear in the start, middle, or end of different words. The Jolly phonics system has been a proven success, and is being used in many educational institutions nationally, and internationally.

Show & Tell:
We will start this Monday inshaAllah our daily show and tell. The Show & Tell is a part of our week that we all look forward to. Children got to share some of their favourite shirts, and books with the class through the means of an oral presentation. Please remember to post your child’s Show & Tell on the fridge to remind him/her of the day they suppose to do their turn.

Reading Buddies:
We started our reading buddies program with the grade four students last Friday. Twice a month on Friday the grade four will visit the Sk1 classroom  and read for us. This is part of the literacy program at Abraar School. The children have been really enjoying this session, and looking forward to having them again insha’Allah.

Social skills:
We’re working really hard on our social skills! We’re becoming exceptionally good at sharing toys, smiling at each other, and apologizing to each other if we hurt each others’ feelings.

Quran:
Every morning we start our day off by enriching our hearts with some beautiful verses from the holy Qur’an.

Du’aa:
In SK we know the importance of reciting specific du’aas during the day. When leaving our classroom we recite quietly, before entering the bathroom we recite, before we eat we recite. We will learn what to say before we go to sleep soon inshaAllah. Please help your child recite these du’aa even in the comfort of their own home.

In Islamic studies:
We are learning about Hajj and we learned that Hajj is the fifth pillar of Islam. We read the story of prophet Ibrahim (pbuh) and we colored the story booklets. We will participate in the Hajj workshop at Abraar School on October 9th inshaAllah.

In Math:
We’ve been reviewing our numbers 1-10. We’ve also been practicing our oral counting up to 100 in fives, and tens! We learned how to put the numbers in order, what comes before and after. We learned how to count backwards. For our calendar time, the kids are learning to count the days of the week by using the ordinal numbers e.g.  First, second, third…etc. The kids are enjoying the days of the week and the weather songs.

In Science:
We talked about the weather and mainly focused on the fall season. We learned about the  different colours of the leaves during the fall and we observed the transition from the summer season into the fall season. We did a beautiful craft about it, please check our bulletin board.

Gym:
To release some of our never-ending energy, we’ve been frequenting the gym, and the playground. Some of our activities have included: Fire safety procedures (including fire drills) - warming up exercises, the pizza game, what time is it Mr. Wolf, and the fire, water and earth game.

Looking Ahead (insha’Allah)

During the month of October we will focus on literature through daily story time, shared reading and guided reading. We will also be working on our Jolly Phonic books one and two.

We’re in the process of organizing a field trip to Cosmic Adventure. Stay tuned for details insha’Allah!

In Art, students will be using different mediums to experiment with colours and textures.

In Math, we will be beginning work on patterning, and sequencing. Students will start by identifying simple patterns followed by more complicated ones. Students will also get a chance to create their own patterns through rhythms, and beats!

In science, we will be learning about some of the properties of different objects such as: hard/soft, rough/smooth floats/sinks etc. We will also be experimenting with colours and seeing what results in blending different combinations of colours.
